Happy Friday! Let’s recap some cybersecurity headlines from this week as we move into the weekend.
Over 237,000 Comcast customers have had their sensitive information including, names, addresses, social security numbers, and birthdays leaked after a security incident at Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS).
The data breach targeting FBCS, which occurred in February, exposed the information of over 4.2 million people. Comcast had previously used the company for debt collection, and was notified in July that its customers had been affected in the breach, which included the use of ransomware to encrypt some of its systems.
Comcast is offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to affected customers.

American Water, America’s largest water and wastewater utility, based in Camden, New Jersey, was hit by a cyberattack disrupting customers’ ability to access its billing and payment platform.
Unauthorized activity was detected within its networks, which led the company to deactivate its systems in an effort to protect data and mitigate the attack. It’s been confirmed that, while its payment portal is offline, customers in the 1,700 communities across 14 states and 18 military installations will not be charged late fees or service disconnections while the portal is offline.
Incident response protocols have been activated and third-party cybersecurity professionals have been brought in as they work diligently to solve the issue and bring systems back online.
