With the massive data breach being called “the largest data breach ever” that reportedly leaked 16 billion passwords continuing to flood cybersecurity news headlines, it’s important to not forget about other cybersecurity incidents going on. Here’s what you might have missed this week:

Aflac’s systems have been hacked by an undisclosed “sophisticated cybercrime group” that may have accessed sensitive customer information.

The insurance company became aware of the incident after detecting suspicious activity within the company network. Thankfully, the company was able to stop the intrusion “within hours.” The attack, which reportedly utilized social engineering tactics, may have compromised information such as Social Security Numbers and insurance claims, and is currently being investigated.

A data breach on Krispy Kreme in late 2024 has been revealed to have exposed over 160,000 individuals’ data, affecting mostly staff of the donut company and their family members.

A significant amount of data was exposed in this breach, including highly sensitive information that puts affected individuals at risk of identity theft and fraud. Some of the compromised information includes full names, birth dates, SSNs, ID numbers, financial account information, biometric data, and more.

Victims of this incident were offered a year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection. Though unconfirmed, the Play ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for this attack.

After a suspected, several hours long cyberattack affected Columbia University earlier this week that brought their email system, student portals, and other systems offline, the university’s IT team notified law enforcement and began working to eliminate the threat.

This incident is suspected to have been a hack due to the nature of the activity, as the incident caused strange images to appear on screens throughout the campus.
