this week in cybersecurity

Can you believe it’s already almost May? Time flies when there are so many cybersecurity incidents to keep up with! Here’s what you might have missed this week:

After a leaker exposed “confidential materials not released to the public” relating to upcoming Pokémon releases last year, Nintendo is tracking down the person responsible. The leaked information included source codes, early character designs, and other information relating to the Pokémon franchise’s works-in-progress.

Since the leaker uploaded the information to a Discord server called “FreakLeak,” Nintendo has reached out to Discord to try to obtain the person’s information. If Discord complies, the leaker may be faced with a lawsuit.

The city of Abilene, Texas was hit by what is being referred to as a “cyber incident” last week and the city’s IT department is working with other cybersecurity experts to investigate.

The city learned of the incident after receiving reports of unresponsive services within its internal network. As soon as the city was made aware, they began carrying out their incident response plan to mitigate the attack. The investigation is ongoing and systems are being monitored closely.

In September of 2023, accounting firm, Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker LLC, experienced a data breach that affected more than 1 million customers, which was then investigated until April of last year.

Blue Shield of California notified its customers that a misconfiguration of the healthcare giant’s use of Google Analytics to track website use allowed for personal and health information of millions of people to be collected, which may have allowed Google to “conduct focused ad campaigns back to those individual members.”

Blue Shield has notified 4.7 million customers of this breach, which likely affects a majority of the insurance company’s customers. It’s unclear if the data has been deleted by Google or if Blue Shield has asked the tech company to do so.

The city of Portland, Oregon was defrauded out of $6.7 million dollars by an attacker pretending to be a vendor for the city after the fraudster sent a message to the city’s new vendor management system requesting for the vendor’s bank account information to be changed.

The hacker persisted and deceived an employee into sending the needed link to update the banking information. A little over a month after this change, the city initiated a payment to the vendor, but the money was deposited into the hacker’s bank account.

Thankfully, due to attention from the FBI, the banks were alerted of the transaction and were able to stop the payment. An investigation has now been launched into this incident.
