Technology Hardware Disposition – What are the risks?

Last month we discussed the importance of IT Asset Management. This month we will discuss another part of IT Asset Management that is becoming more critical every day to any business-IT asset disposition.

When disposing of your technology hardware, as a Colorado business, it is your responsibility to ensure your technology is disposed of properly. Electronics contain a variety of harmful and in some cases even toxic substances, that when discarded improperly can pose risks to our health and the environment.

CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions and monitors on average contain 4 to 8 pounds of lead. Flat panel TVs, laptops and monitors have lamps containing mercury inside. Improper recycling can result in fines for your company. Proper recycling of these materials also reduces our need to mine or extract more of the natural resources used to make electronics.

Another concern is the destruction of all data on any hardware you are disposing. Obviously you do not want any of your data or your customer’s data getting in the wrong hands. When you dispose your technology hardware you need to make sure you use a recycling company that is fully certified. We use a local company called Techno Rescue.

Techno Rescue  is certified by R2 & ISO 14001 for electronics recycling & data destruction. They provide each of our customers with a Certificate of Destruction-guaranteeing not only that the data possibly still residing on any of the hardware disposed has been removed and destroyed, but also that the hardware was disposed of properly from an environmental perspective.

If you are a Platte River Networks customer, we offer you complimentary technology recycling through Techno Rescue. Please call us for more information: 303-255-1941.
