This month, we are spotlighting Kari Horst, a Support Specialist and Premium+ technician at Kiosk Information Systems. She has been with PRN for a little over one year and loves working onsite as she gets to develop relationships with the users and learn their specific needs. Kari has worked in IT for 21 years, but prior to that, she worked as a reporter, photographer, copy editor, and graphic artist for a number of newspapers across the country.
Kari received her journalism degree from Metropolitan State University, and straight out of college she worked as the sports photographer for the Estes Park Trail Gazette. It helped establish her love for photography. She moved to IT after taking a few years off to raise her children. The school needed someone who could work on computers, and it just came naturally to Kari. This job allowed her to work during the school days with her kids and also allowed her to lead Girl Scout camp during the summers for 8 years. In fact, she served as a Girl Scout leader for 17 years.
Kari is a former Army brat and lived in Pennsylvania, New York, Germany, Texas, Wisconsin and Hawaii before she was 10. She has been with her husband for 31 years and married for 25. They actually knew each other in high school but never dated. They have 3 children and a 15-year-old cat named Shadow. A fun fact about her family is that they all share some sort of birthday. Kari was born on here grandma’s birthday, her oldest child was born on her mother in law’s birthday, and then she has twins that obviously share a birthday.
Kari’s hobbies include photography, being outdoors, and sports. She is happiest when she is outdoors with her camera “freezing time.” In fact, she would love to be a professional photographer. When she was a child she wanted to be a journalist, which she accomplished. She also wanted to be a mom, and 3 kids and a grandbaby later, she has accomplished that as well. Kari’s favorite movie is DieHard, which was her first date with her husband. Her favorite superhero is Deadpool and her favorite book is A Separate Peace by John Knowles.
We are happy to have Kari a part of the Platte River Team!
