Cool Tools

Welcome to Applied Tech’s “Cool Tools to make your life easier” series. We dedicate this project to sharing with others two important Applied Tech core values: 1) The concept of “paying it forward” because it is the right thing to do; and 2) sharing useful, timely “tidbits” of knowledge with other people because continued learning throughout life is fun.

Each month, our entire team collaborates to present more cool tools and techie tips that we think our clients would want to know about. Be sure to let us know if you have any questions, or ideas for other cool topics you’d like to know more about.

Please note: Hardware and software requirements needed to enjoy the full experience of the internet evolve quickly. Older computers and/or slow(er) internet connections will present limitations when trying to view some of this content.

A tool so cool, even WE use it!

It is the easiest, fastest way to install or update your favorite software. Period.

At Applied Tech we pay for a business version, Ninite Pro, but the average user can get it free and, as “the How-to-Geek” says, it’s so easy “even Grandma can pull it off.”

Go to their homepage,  http://ninite.com/, pick out the apps you want, run the installer and go sit down to watch the winning pass of your favorite football team. The work is done for you without a signup, client or registration. You save time because there is no need to go out to individual sites and download each app, one at a time. So it’s a real time saver!

Here’s how it works: Once you’ve chosen the bundles of apps you want, just click and Ninite uploads offscreen, picking out the latest version that is right for your PC, in your language, without all the toolbars and other junk.

Could it be simpler? No.

What an idea. No more clicking next, next, next, next, next next, next …..

reminderDo you sometimes forget the file attachments you meant to include in an email message? Thanks to a free plugin for Outlook, now you can be alerted when you do just that.

Head over to CodeTwo‘s website and download the free Outlook Attachment Reminder. Install and configure it to scan for text in your email’s subject line and body text (such as “attachment” or “attached” or “see document”). When you press the send button, if the system finds that you included these phrases but did not attach a file, it will prompt you to do so before sending out the email.

Move over leather wallet, Google Wallet is coming!  Starting soon, Google’s newest addition, Google Wallet, will allow users to make purchases and payments all from a single smartphone.

The technology is also designed so that the user can turn the chip off when Google Wallet is not being used, making it safe from hackers. If the smartphone is lost, the data can also be wiped remotely. While the concept of Google Wallet has great potential, there are still several limitations to the system as Google continues to look for more partners for the enterprise before its official launch, which is slated for within a month or two.  Google’s intention is that Google Wallet will be an open mobile wallet holding all the cards and coupons you keep in your leather wallet today.

Cocktail napkins and the backs of envelopes may be a good place to jot down that next million dollar idea. But when it comes to designing a website, you want an online software that makes it fast and easy to create, link, preview and share mockups in real time. And https://gomockingbird.com/ soars as that tool.

Mockingbird helps with wireframing, the first step in the design process in which the basic illustrations and components of the webpage are decided. It gives your layouts a great starting point and a solid foundation and helps clarify exactly what needs to be on the different page types of your website.

By taking the time to create at least a simple wireframe using a tool like Mockingbird, you can make sure that your designs will take into account all the different page elements that need to go into the design, and that they’re positioned in the best possible way. Best of all, it is cost-effective because it allows wireframes to be revised or discarded without costly back-and-forth exchanges.

Mockingbird works in Safari, Firefox and Chrome and has a number of unique features. One of its better time-saving features is automatic text resizing: If you change the size of a button or similar element, Mockingbird changes the text size to match. It also lets you create multi-page wireframes with links.

With Mockingbird, you’ll want to make your website on the fly!

Applied Tech presents: An eye-opener of a cool site!

If Alice had a Corning-made mirror, she probably would never have stepped through the looking glass in search of dreams and adventure. At least, that is what the marketers at Corning want you to believe in their YouTube presentation “A Day Made of Glass.”

In this glass-meets-the-Jetsons production, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cf7IL_eZ38&feature=player_embedded  , Corning makers show their idea of where technology is going in the not-so-distant future. And the multiple uses of glass, from the kitchen to the street, are so compelling that Alice would have never bothered to look for something else to do. Of course, their glass is just a vehicle for new uses of computers in our daily life….  But it’s still an eye-opener!
