WannaCry Part 2: Petya

Following WannaCry, Another Massive Ransomware Outbreak Going Global

A new ransomware called Petya, like WannaCry, is using tools developed by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) to spread across the world.

Ukraine’s national banks, power companies, airport, metro services and several organizations are under attack by Petya.

Outside the Ukraine, infections have also apparently hit Danish shipping and energy company Maersk, British advertiser WPP, Russian oil industry company Rosnoft and the US pharma giant Merck.

The attack is spreading fast and security companies are seeing thousands of infection attempts at the moment in an attack reminiscent of the May 2017 WannaCry incident. WannaCry spread to hundreds of thousands of endpoints in over 150 countries in a matter of hours. And similar to WannaCry, this ransomware demands $300 in Bitcoin similar to get the decryption code.

This  Petya ransomware affects only old Windows PCs which are running without latest updates. If you are running latest Windows 7 SP1 or latest OS from Microsoft with recent updates, you don’t have to worry about this cyberattack. All Applied Tech customers should be protected.
