Kerry asks: “I enter a lot of web page addresses onto an Excel spreadsheet and they become clickable links, but I don’t want them to. Is this a feature that can be turned off?”

Often when web and email addresses are entered into an Excel spreadsheet they are converted to hyperlinks. This is a handy feature to allow users to access those addresses quickly. But they can turn into a big pain if that is not a feature you are interested in because it’s easy to click a hyperlink as your working; as I’m sure you have experienced.
Hyperklinks can be disabled so your web and email addresses are saved as text (in Excel versions 2002, 2003, 2007, & 2010)
To disable automatic hyperlinks in Excel 2002 & 2003:
- Launch Excel and choose Tools | AutoCorrect Options from the menu bar to access the AutoCorrect dialog box.
- Select the ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.
- Deselect the ‘Internet and Network Paths With Hyperlinks’ check box and click OK to apply the change.
To disable automatic hyperlinks in Excel 2007, click the Office button and then click the Excel Options button. In the Excel Options window, select ‘Proofing’ in the left panel. Click the ‘AutoCorrect Options’ button to open the same AutoCorrect dialog box you remember from earlier versions.
To disable automatic hyperlinks in Excel 2010, click the File button and then click the ‘Options’ button. Next, select ‘Proofing’ from the left panel. Click ‘AutoCorrect Options’ button, and then select the ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab and deselect the ‘Internet and Network Paths With Hyperlinks’ check box and click OK to apply the change.
These new settings will save as defaults for Excel. You will need to manually change back the settings if you choose to have the hyperlinks active.
